Meet Suzy Hobbs
A short Q & A with the business development lead at Hobbs of Henley Ltd
So, Suzy – how did you end up here at Hobbs of Henley?
Well, I married into it! Hobbs of Henley is my husband Jonathan’s family business, so I originally came into the fold through family ties. But it didn’t take long before I completely fell in love with the river, and the company too. What started as the odd bit of helping out here and there I now work in marketing and am proud to support the team, our river-based heritage and the many ways we connect with our community.
What’s your approach as part of a team that changes with the seasons?
I believe in good communication, mutual respect and trying to create a positive working atmosphere. Our team are crucial when things get busy, I try to ensure everyone feels valued, informed and part of something special.
How do you strike the balance between tradition and modern touches?
It’s a special kind of challenge, and one I really enjoy. Hobbs has such a rich history here in Henley, and we’re incredibly proud of that. But we’re not about standing still. Whether it’s introducing new theme cruises or investing in more sustainable technology, we always ask: does this add to our story? Does it serve our customers and community? That mix of heritage and innovation is what keeps things exciting.
What does the river mean to you personally?
For me the Thames is more than a workplace, it’s part of the scenery of everyday life, a source of calm and connection. Being based on the river is a privilege, and I’m always reminded how fortunate we are to operate here.
What’s it like preparing for Henley’s big events?
There’s a lot of detail and a good deal of planning involved. Whether it’s a large public event, a corporate outing or one of our special cruises, success comes down to organisation, teamwork and clear communication. Seeing it all come together is very satisfying.
What excites you most about the future?
I’m keen to help Hobbs of Henley continue growing in a way that feels right. That might be broadening what we offer, working more closely with the community or simply encouraging more people to enjoy the river. There’s plenty of possibility, and I’m glad to be part of that.
How do you unwind or stay inspired?
Nothing beats a walk with my dogs, it always clears my head. I also enjoy cooking, going out for meals and spending time with friends and family. I find inspiration in people who give back to their communities; that’s one of the reasons I’m a trustee of Riverside Counselling Service, a local mental health charity I care deeply about. Having experienced the impact of mental health challenges within our own families, I’m passionate about supporting others to get the help they need.
And finally – what three words would you use to describe Hobbs of Henley?
Heritage. Hospitality. Heart.
