A 4 minute Read by Suzy Hobbs
If you’ve ever strolled along the Henley waterfront, chances are you’ve spotted our most eye-catching boat – The New Orleans. With her tall funnels, classic Mississippi paddle-steamer styling, and elegant presence, she’s a real head-turner and without doubt the jewel in the Hobbs of Henley fleet. We’re incredibly proud to own her, not least because she has such a rich history and continues to play host to some truly special occasions.
A Touch of the Mississippi on the Thames
Back in the late 1980s, Hobbs of Henley were receiving more and more enquiries from people looking to hire larger boats for big functions. At the time, the fleet was popular but didn’t have anything that could comfortably handle these grand occasions. That all changed in 1991 when we decided to take the plunge and commission something truly special – a half-a-million-pound Mississippi-style stern paddle wheeler from Jakubait and Sons of Greenwich.
Designed by Don Tate Associates, she was named New Orleans in homage to Robert Fulton’s famous 1811 paddle steamer that once plied the Ohio River. At 115 feet long and weighing in at 75 tonnes, she was (and still is) one of the largest vessels of her kind on the non-tidal Thames. Her arrival made quite an impression – towering funnels, gleaming wood-panelled saloon, and an unmistakable silhouette that quickly became part of Henley’s character.
When she was officially launched in Henley by Sir Anthony Darrant MP, she didn’t just turn heads, she started conversations. Some thought she wasn’t “traditional” enough, but our Tony Hobbs defended the decision proudly, pointing out that paddle steamers had once been common on the Thames in the 19th century. Within no time, the local community (and our passengers) came to love her as the “jewel in the crown” of the fleet.

A Boat That’s Seen It All
Over the years, The New Orleans has become more than just a boat, she’s a stage for unforgettable memories. In the early 1990s, we offered “Mississippi experiences” with Cajun cooking and live jazz bands on board, and she quickly earned a reputation as one of the best party venues on the river. In fact, her popularity was such that by the mid-90s, as the country was coming out of recession, corporate parties and private charters were booking fast and far in advance.
By 2016, she had carried an estimated 300,000 passengers – a testament to just how many lives and celebrations she’s been part of. Weddings, anniversaries, wakes, corporate dinners, jazz nights, Christmas parties, The New Orleans has seen them all. She’s even played host to Elvis tribute acts, caricature artists, fireworks, and “Midsomer Murders” themed evenings. Each one adds another story to her history, another moment etched into the Thames.
Perfect for Any Celebration
One of the things we love most about The New Orleans is her versatility. She’s the perfect setting for just about any event:
- Weddings – imagine saying “I do” on the Thames with the river as your backdrop.
- Anniversaries and family celebrations – from milestone birthdays to golden anniversaries, the atmosphere on board always feels extra special.
- Corporate events – whether it’s a conference, a client dinner, or a staff celebration, she offers something a little different to a hotel or meeting room.
- Unique gatherings – she’s even hosted wakes, proving how meaningful and adaptable the space can be.
