Visualising Your Gentle Thames Cruise with Hobbs of Henley

A 5 minute Read by Suzy Hobbs

Thinking about taking a river cruise but not sure what to expect? Before you step aboard with Hobbs of Henley, who are celebrating 156 years in boating, here’s a glimpse of the sights, villages, and riverside gems that await you. Picture yourself drifting along the Thames, past historic estates, charming pubs, and scenic backwaters, while the stories of the river unfold around you. From bustling regatta stretches to tranquil hidden corners, this insight will help you visualise the journey and get excited about the adventure ahead.

Starting Your Adventure in Henley-on-Thames

Your journey begins in Henley-on-Thames, a town whose identity is inseparable from the river. Look across the river and you’ll see Henley Bridge, watched over by the sculpted heads of Father Thames and Isis. Nearby, the legendary Leander Club has trained Olympic champions for generations. During the summer months, this stretch becomes the heart of the Henley Royal Regatta Course, one of Britain’s most iconic sporting events.

Riverside Elegance and Rowing Heritage

As you follow downstream, you’ll notice the scenery unfolding like a story. On one side, Phyllis Court’s Cromwellian Wall hints at its role in the English Civil War, while elegant homes and boathouses line the opposite bank, testaments to centuries of riverside living.

Temple Island stands out, a small Georgian folly marking the start of the regatta course. Its picturesque appearance makes it seem lifted straight from a painting, and today it serves as a stunning venue for weddings and private events. Just beyond, the striking white façade of Henley Business School blends riverside grandeur with modern academic life.

Villages, Colleges, and Riverside Pubs

If you are travelling upstream, charming villages appear. Shiplake College’s riverside boathouses reflect a proud rowing tradition. For those who enjoy pausing and exploring, this stretch of the river is a delight. Wargrave, for example, is ideal for mooring up and taking a leisurely break. Here, the St George & Dragon is a welcoming riverside pub with a spacious terrace and a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for a lunch stop or an afternoon drink. Continuing on upstream you’ll reach the Coppa Club in Sonning which offers riverside dining and some public mooring, perfect for a relaxed stop along your journey.

Back in Henley, The Angel on the Bridge offers classic pub charm, hearty food, and riverside views that make for a memorable pause or The Flower Pot Pub at Flower Pot Jetty is a hidden gem, celebrated for its riverside seating and delicious food.

Other highlights worth noting include The Compleat Angler in Marlow, a perfect spot for watching boats drift by near the Marlow Bridge. These stops aren’t just about food and drink—they’re invitations to immerse yourself in the riverside lifestyle.

Hidden Gems and Historic Houses

Beyond the pubs, the Thames reveals even more character. Culham Court, one of the river’s grand private houses, commands attention, while Medmenham Abbey tells tales of its past as a monastery and the infamous Hellfire Club. Across the water, Danesfield House rises dramatically above the river, its sweeping views a sight that makes you pause and appreciate the grandeur of this part of the Thames. History buffs will also appreciate passing Bisham Abbey, a Knights Templar Stronghold, and sites of former Viking settlements along the banks.

Navigation and Beyond

Whether you go upstream toward Reading or downstream towards Marlow, the river is punctuated by historic locks. You’ll navigate through Marsh Lock, Shiplake Lock, and Sonning Lock if heading west. Heading east, you’ll pass through Hambleden, Hurley, Temple, and Marlow Locks.

For those on a Self Drive Adventure, time is of the essence:

  • 1 Hour: Reach Hurley for a picnic or head towards Wargrave.
  • 2 Hours: Reach Marlow Bridge or the Coppa Club.
  • 3 Hours: Journey as far as Cookham Lock or Caversham Lock in Reading.

If you’re feeling truly ambitious, the river continues upstream to Oxford (+8 hours) or downstream to Windsor (+3 hours) and London (+12 hours).
